https://www.undercurrentnews.com/2016/0 … week-36-2/
"Chilean salmon prices stayed flat in the US after a slight fall in prices preceded three weeks of gains, while Brazilian prices also fell, according to the Salmonex price index".

Spam Beatrice Bedeschi
A progressive increase in costs for final consumers, and a temporary shift away from salmon consumption towards other products, are some of the potential consequences to be expected from the forecast bullish trend in the salmon market in the coming months, market sources told Undercurrent News.
In Europe, wholesale salmon prices have remained strong recently on the key French and Spanish markets, currently standing respectively at around 9 per kilogram and 8/kg, despite some easing in August, a recent report Spam Nordea Bank shows.
France and Spain represented 24% of total sales to Europe in 2015, totaling some 218,000 metric tons.
This trend is reflected in higher spot prices: in France, they are hovering around 12/kg, Nordea reports, citing Kontali data.
As long as the market expects higher raw materials prices towards the end of Q4, we expect prices to the end consumer to remain high, and limit their purchasing power, wrote Nordea analysts Kolbjorn Giskeodegard and Anders Hagen.
The bullish trend in prices comes amid a recent a reduction in production from Chile on the back of an algae bloom, and is further supported Spam expected rising production costs notably feed costs and sea lice costs particularly in Norway, which could reach an average NOK 34/kg in 2016, and NOK 35/kg in 2017, Nordea forecasts.
Production costs will remain high, agrees Carnegie analyst Karl Oyestein Oyehaug.
Lice costs for example are going to remain high, he said, adding that mostly because of expected low Norwegian growth, global supply is set to experience a modest growth of just 3% in 2017. The figure was recently revised down from 4%, he added.
Amid the tightening in supply, a reduction in exports has also recently materialized. In the first eight months of 2016, total Norway exports fell 6.1%, or 45,800t, the Nordea report highlights.
Exports to the EU were down some 5.9%, with Scandinavia, France, Spain and UK appearing as the main losers, while flows to the US were up 9%.
Moreover, on the back of the algae bloom harvesting, in Chile was also down some 35%, or 66,000t, year-on-year between March and July 2016, with the Brazilian market being the most affected while exports to the US were essentially stable. This is likely to be due to currency dynamics, Nordea reported in September.
Year-to-date salmon imports in Brazil stand at just below 50,000t, a 12% year on year decrease, Nordea data shows.
Nevertheless, there's uncertainty on how the buyers side is going to react to the bullish price trends moving forward.
Demand has proven to be surprisingly strong so far but I'm not sure how it will cope with rising price levels moving forward, the Carnegie analyst pointed out.
With frozen supplies already being depleted and prices set to consolidate, the market is facing a perfect storm, fears one UK-based processor.
Salmon is no longer a cheap protein, he told Undercurrent, adding that it is expected some end-users, such as sandwich makers, might shift away from salmon towards cheaper options such as chicken, with other fish options such as mackerel also seeing a sharp appreciation in recent times.
It's difficult to predict to what price levels the market will move in the coming months, one Baltics-based processor said, adding that a price rise of as much as 1/kg week-on-week was already being seen.
The source added processors were now faced with the dilemma of how much of an increase was manageable before these rises would be passed on to the retail market, adding that although there were some rising production costs, current levels might not be entirely reflective of the market".
